Osterreicher Speaks on Media Law Issues at National Press Club and New York State Bar Events

Mickey Osterreicher, Of Counsel at Hiscock & Barclay, LLP, spoke at a National Press Club Committee Event in Washington, DC on January 25, 2012 on the ongoing assault on the right to photograph and record in public – covering the issues and its causes along with some recent cases and legal decisions he has been involved with in a presentation entitled "Photography and Freedom of the Press." Additionally, Osterreicher joined a panel of media experts to discuss "Newsgathering Practices and Issues in the Digital Communications Age" at the New York State Bar Association's Committee Meeting on Media Law on January 24, 2012 in New York City.

The programs examined various legal newsgathering issues, including those arising from the use of modern communications technologies which have not only impacted the way journalists gather and report the news, but also raises fundamental First Amendment issues in today's legal landscape. Joseph M. Finnerty, Hiscock & Barclay's Media and First Amendment Law Practice Area Chair, attended both of these presentations.

The State Bar panel, led by Rex Smith, Executive Editor of the Times Union and Committee Chair Michael Grygiel, Esq., included: Jonathan Dienst (NBC News Contributing Correspondent), Dan Harris (ABC News Correspondent), Allan Tannenbaum (Polaris Images Photojournalist), Barbara Wall, Esq. (Gannett Company VP and Associate General Counsel), Jennifer Preston (New York Times Staff Writer), and Mickey Osterreicher, Esq. (Hiscock & Barclay Of Counsel and General Counsel for the National Press Photographers Association).

Osterreicher is a member of Hiscock & Barclay's Media and First Amendment Law Practice Area in the Firm's Buffalo office. He is an award winning photojournalist with almost 40 years experience and focuses his practice on contracts, media, copyright and First Amendment law, and is actively involved with matters such as cameras in the courtroom, the federal shield law, media access, public photography, orphan works and copyright infringement.
